🎶☀️ Spring Concert: Music of the Americas

June 1, 2024 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm CDT

Enjoy wind ensemble music from the community Twin Ports Wind Orchestra (TPWO) and conductor Dr. Mark Whitlock in the spring concert, “Music of the Americas.” This concert features rhythms and stories in music by composers from Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, and the United States of America. Nubia Jaime Donjuan, an incredible Mexican cellist and composer, joins as a featured guest conductor.
Nubia Jaime Donjuan composed Maso Ye’eme, a fusion piece inspired by La Danza del Venado Yaqui (from the Sonoran Desert) and the popular Cuban genre of danzón. Jaime Donjuan navigates between two worlds as a performer (cellist) and composer. Proud of her roots and being raised by her musician father and historian mother, she has adopted the artistic and cultural expressions of her surroundings to create her music, always taking inspiration from different elements of nature. Jaime Donjuan has been the first woman to win the Arturo Márquez Composition Contest for Chamber Orchestra, with first place for the work Maso Ye´eme. At the TPWO concert, she will talk about Maso Ye’eme composed for symphonic band. We are so excited to have her and to play some of the music from last year’s concert that was canceled due to winter weather.
TPWO concert repertoire includes
The Role Playing Game – Alexandre F. Travossos (Brazilian)
Villa Lobos Suite – Heitor Villa-Lobos (Brazilian)
Suite Arrullo – Victoriano Valencia Rincón (Colombian)
Masoye’ Eme – Nubia Jaime Donjuan (Mexican) **composer visiting as guest conductor for this concert**
Selections from “Star Wars” – John Williams (American)
Liberty Fanfare – John Williams (American)
Additionally, students from Cloquet High School Band (directed by Mr. Kevin Huseth) are performing as Honors Musicians with TPWO.
