1. “Playing with Fear” by Matthew Wagner
Playing with Fear is a haunt lover’s tribute to the immersive world of haunted house attractions. Born of a lifetime obsession with haunts, this presentation will cover some key components that make a good haunt successful and memorable. From DIY haunted houses to the extreme juggernauts that dominate the industry, our journey will leave you screaming with excitement for the Halloween season.
Presenter Bio: Matthew Wagner is an Assistant Professor in Dance and Musical Theatre at UMD and a former co-owner of Solve Entertainment Escape Room. Previously, he worked with immersive theatre company, Third Rail Projects, on their Steampunk Haunted House. His first professional acting job was at the Mall of America in Camp Snoopy’s haunted maze. He has been nerding out about haunted houses since he was 7 years old.
2. “Why You Should Care About Black Horror!” or
“I’m going to start and argument about what makes for a genre and end up low-key accusing you of being racist.”
Jeanine Weekes Schroer
An argument about when something should count as horror ends with low-key accusations of genre-blinding racism and shouting while crying, “Stop saying Jordan Peele isn’t horror!!!”
Dr. Schroer is a philosopher of race and feminist theory and an Associate Professor of philosophy at UMD in the Department of Geography & Philosophy. Her teaching and research concern the ethics and politics of social oppression and its remedies, including, the metaphysics of race and racism; feminist ethics and social theory; and empirical and experimental philosophical approaches to racism, sexism, and ethics.
