Our First Bus Ride Book Reading at Fitgers Bookstore

Fitgers Bookstore is excited to welcome to the reading of Our First Bus Ride!

 You’ve likely learned about Ruby Bridges in Louisiana or the Little Rock Nine in Arkansas—but did you know Minnesota has its own powerful school integration story?

This engaging reading features the recently release historical children’s book Our First Bus Ride.  Our First Bus Ride tells the story of school integration in Minnesota beginning in 1971. The book highlights the historic pairing of Hale Elementary School and Field Elementary School through a voluntary busing program designed to bring students from different neighborhoods together.

Through the eyes of second graders Molly and Monica, readers will explore themes of courage, friendship, fairness, and hope during one of Minnesota’s first school integration efforts.

Derek Francis, author of Our First Bus Ride, will lead the reading followed by Q&A and book signing!  Come learn about Minnesota History!
