Leaf-Peeping by Car: The Northland’s 5 Best Fall Drives

The Best Scenic Drives for Fall Colors in the Northland

Fall in the Northland is pure magic. From Duluth’s hillside views to the winding highways along Lake Superior, every turn offers a kaleidoscope of red, orange, and gold. If you’re looking for the best way to take it all in from the comfort of your car, here are some of the most breathtaking fall drives.

1. Skyline Parkway – Duluth

Starting Point: Enger Park (1601 Enger Tower Dr, Duluth, MN)

This historic route winds above Duluth, offering sweeping views of Lake Superior framed by bursts of fall color. Stop at Enger Tower, Hawk Ridge (perfect for bird migration season), or just pull over at one of the many overlooks.

2. Highway 61 – The North Shore Scenic Drive

Starting Point: Canal Park, Duluth (Lake Ave & Canal Park Dr)

Few drives rival this stretch of road in autumn. The contrast of fiery maples, evergreens, and the shimmering lake is unforgettable. Don’t miss Gooseberry Falls, Split Rock Lighthouse, and Palisade Head along the way.

3. Jay Cooke State Park Loop – Carlton to Duluth

Starting Point: Jay Cooke State Park Visitor Center (780 MN-210, Carlton, MN)

Head southwest from Duluth to Jay Cooke State Park. The St. Louis River cutting through fiery forests is a fall sight you won’t forget. The Swinging Bridge is a must-stop, and looping back to Duluth makes for a perfect afternoon drive.

4. Wisconsin’s Highway 13 – Bayfield Peninsula

Starting Point: Downtown Superior, WI (Belknap St & Tower Ave)

Just across the bridge from Duluth-Superior, this drive takes you along Lake Superior’s south shore. The small towns, apple orchards, and forested stretches make it an idyllic fall trip.

5. Superior National Forest Scenic Byway – Highway 1

Starting Point: Silver Bay, MN (junction of Highway 61 & Highway 1)

This winding route between Ely and the North Shore is a leaf-peeper’s dream. With dense forests, lakes, and endless curves, it feels like driving through a painting.

Pro tip: Plan your drive for late September to early October for peak color, and bring along a thermos of coffee or cider for the perfect fall outing.

Things Happening in Duluth Now!
About Do Duluth

As a working mother of two spirited and adventurous little girls, Nora and Greta, I’m always on the lookout for exciting activities in and around Duluth. We like to call ourselves “the gal pals” because we’re a tight-knit team, exploring the wonders of this beautiful city together.

For those who know me, they would definitely say I have a serious case of FOMO (fear of missing out), which means I’m always looking for the next adventure and trying to make the most out of every moment. I’m a firm believer that life is too short to sit around and wait for things to happen, so I’m always on the go and trying new things.

One of my favorite places in the world is Duluth, and I’m lucky enough to call it home. There’s just something about this city that fills me with a sense of joy and wonder. Whether it’s hiking along the shore of Lake Superior, or seeking new opportunities for fun and enrichment, there’s always something to see and do in Duluth.
